The 44Cup Puntaldia in northeast Sardinia has seen a significant shift in leadership with Team Nika taking the lead after a dramatic day of racing. After nine races, the competitive nature of the RC44 fleet was highlighted by the fact that seven different teams had won races, showcasing the tightness of the competition.
On the day of racing, a change in wind direction to the southeast brought fresh challenges. Despite a one-hour delay, racing commenced with a steady 12 knots of breeze. This wind indicated a shift from the previous days where conditions were influenced by the landmass of the nearby Tavolara isle.
In the first race, Team Nika and Christian Zuerrer’s Black Star Sailing Team battled fiercely at the start, with Team Nika managing to secure a slight advantage by staying on starboard tack for longer. The race concluded with Team Nika ahead of Artemis Racing and Black Star Sailing Team, despite some on-water dramas including a penalty for Aleph Racing due to a collision.
The second race proved tricky, as both Team Nika and Charisma faced OCS calls, but Team Nika’s quick restart did not hinder their overall standings. Peninsula Racing had a strong start, leveraging the winds effectively to cross ahead of Aleph Racing and Black Star, securing the win.
The final of three races experienced fluctuating conditions as Team Aqua secured a strong lead, ultimately claiming their first race victory of the series followed closely by Charisma.
After today’s events, Team Nika emerged as the new leader with a six-point margin going into the final day, despite a turbulent second race. Vladimir Prosikhin remarked on the challenges faced during the racing, noting the rightward shift that impacted their start but was recognised positively amidst variable conditions.
Chris Bake’s Team Aqua showed outstanding performance with a score of 4-4-1 for the day, marking a triumphant return to form following his recovery from a knee operation. Meanwhile, John Bassadone was pleased with the solid performance of his new Peninsula Racing boat, indicating its potential moving forward in the final races.
As the competition heats up, the final day anticipates similar conditions, with racing scheduled to start at 1200, keeping all teams within striking distance of victory.
