Brisbane Race Week (BRW) 2026 commenced today at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, featuring nearly 50 boats and introducing a variety of racing formats throughout the week. Held on the scenic waters of Moreton Bay, BRW has become an essential fixture in Queensland’s sailing calendar, showcasing a mix of boat types and crews.
The event not only prioritises competitive sailing but also dedicates significant attention to its social programme, fostering camaraderie among participants. Key events include A Night in Rio, Legends on the Lawn, and the Wynnum Manly Country and Western Evening.
Event Director Anton Prange highlighted BRW’s community-driven ethos, emphasising the accessibility and enjoyment of participating in a regatta close to home. With a focus on fostering a relaxed atmosphere, Prange mentions that the social aspect is equally vital, with crews contributing a bottle of rum at the week’s start, creating a collective bond.
This year’s off-water involvement includes around 400 participants, signalling continued growth and enthusiasm for the event. Racing kicks off with the Green Island Lap, adopting a unique ‘hot lap’ format akin to Formula 1 qualifying. This approach encourages strategic thinking, teamwork, and adds a level of excitement ahead of the competition.
Race Officer Paul Bolton expressed pride in overseeing the event for the fourth consecutive year, noting the increasing quality of competitors and the lively spirit they bring. Over the course of the week, participants will challenge each other on varied courses, consisting of passage racing and off-the-beach challenges, which are designed to test their skills across diverse conditions.
As the week unfolds, BRW 2026 is set to deliver an outstanding experience for both participants and spectators alike, solidifying its reputation as a premier sailing event in Australia.
