Day 2 of Brisbane Race Week presented by Porsche Centre Brisbane saw a marked increase in both the scale and intensity of racing on Moreton Bay, with the fleet transitioning to passage racing and the Off the Beach divisions participating.
Approaching 50 boats competed across various courses, presenting new challenges for the teams as the regatta began to solidify.
In the Monohull Performance division, Tool Time (Stephen O’Brien) retained the lead after a steady performance, with KERB (John Whitbread) closely following in second place.
The Monohull Cruising division experienced a shift at the top, with Danseur taking the lead ahead of French Kiss and Blackadder, showcasing the critical need for consistency across different racing formats.
Leading the Multihull division, Dog House (Bruce Hume) remains the only catamaran in the fleet.
Conditions on Moreton Bay were again significant, necessitating crews to adapt swiftly from the hot lap format on the first day to longer passage-style races. Race Officer Paul Bolton remarked on the versatility required throughout the week.
“With the change in format, it’s about backing up performances and making the right calls across different styles of racing,” Bolton emphasised.
As the leaderboard began to take shape after two days of racing, several different formats remain, ensuring that the regatta remains open.
The addition of the Finn and VX One classes on the Off the Beach course enhanced the competition depth.
In the VX One fleet, Mack One (Ben Franklin) led through consistent performances, while Double Black (John Somerville) and Lateshift (Peter Conde) are also in contention.
The Finn class has produced some of the most competitive racing, with Annie (Larry Kleist), Jazel (Kane Sinclair) and Lonya (Tristan Perez) tied on points after two races, with a strong lack of separation at the top.
Off the water, the regatta’s social activities, particularly the ‘Legends on the Lawn’ event, fostered community among crews after racing.
Event Director Anton Prange commented on the event’s growth, noting its unpredictability. “This regatta just continues to exceed expectations. For me, it’s as much about what happens off the water as it is on it. The sailing family is real, and we really see that here, a regatta developed by sailors, for sailors.”
