SailGP – Aussies back on top of the season leaderboard after nail-biting Podium Final in Germany

The BONDS Flying Roos put on a spectacular performance at the Germany Sail Grand Prix, securing a second-place finish in the thrilling Podium Final against fierce rivals France and Great Britain. Tom Slingsby’s team dominated throughout the weekend, achieving podium positions in six out of seven qualifying fleet races, which allowed them to enter the final as the top team based on event points.

In a gripping finale, the Australians showcased their resilience, overcoming a challenging start where they found themselves in third place. They made a remarkable comeback to overtake Great Britain by the fifth leg, setting up a nail-biting sprint to the finish against France. Despite their best efforts, they crossed the line just behind the French team, marking their third podium finish of the 2025 SailGP Season.

After the race, Slingsby expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing the fun they had out on the water. He noted that after a recent setback in San Francisco, returning to form in Sassnitz was a welcome change. With this result, the Australians have reclaimed the lead in the overall season standings with 61 points, closely followed by the Black Foils and Emirates GBR.

Strategist Tash Bryant echoed Slingsby’s sentiments, praising the team’s perseverance and ability to adapt to the challenges faced during the race. She highlighted the competitive nature of the final, where every moment counted, and expressed pride in the team’s determination.

Looking ahead, the BONDS Flying Roos are set to compete next at the ROCKWOOL France Sail Grand Prix in St Tropez on September 12-13, aiming to extend their lead as they approach the Abu Dhabi Grand Final in November.
