America returns to challenge for the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup

American Racing Challenger Team USA has been confirmed as an Official Challenger for the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup, marking a significant revival of American sailing on the world stage. The team represents the Challenging Yacht Club Sail Newport and will be led by distinguished yachtsman Ken Read, a two-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.

The United States has a storied history in the America’s Cup, having first claimed the trophy in 1851 and maintaining a 132-year winning streak. The confirmation of this new challenger ends a period where the upcoming 2027 edition was poised to be the first without a U.S. team, reinstating America’s competitive presence in what is the world’s oldest trophy in international sport.

Marzio Perrelli, CEO of the America’s Cup Partnership, expressed excitement over the new contender, highlighting the management team’s acquisition of key assets from American Magic, making them a formidable contender. This includes the AC75 yacht ‘Patriot’ along with two AC40 platforms, giving them a strong start ahead of the Naples competition in the spring of 2027.

The collaboration also extends to US Sailing, aiming to enhance opportunities for youth and support female sailors, thus fostering a more inclusive future in American sailing.

Karel Komárek, Co-Founder of American Racing Challenger Team USA, stated their commitment to redefining America’s presence in the Cup, emphasizing a careful selection process to find the right partnerships that would align with their vision.

Chris Welch, Co-Founder and Vice Chairman, noted the importance of this venture not just for competition but for shaping the future of sailing in the U.S., alongside iconic American brands.

Ken Read, the team’s CEO, underscored the honour of representing the United States once again in the America’s Cup, acknowledging the challenges ahead but displaying determination to build a legacy worthy of American sailors.

Grant Dalton, Chairman of the America’s Cup Partnership, welcomed the team as a fantastic addition to the contest, particularly for sailing fans worldwide.

Details regarding the official team launch will be shared in the near future, with the competition scheduled to take place in the stunning Bay of Naples, Italy, which will host the America’s Cup for the first time.

Overall, the return of an American team is seen as an encouraging milestone for the future of U.S.-based sailing fans and America’s Cup enthusiasts around the globe.
