All set for Range Rover Sardinia Cup

Porto Cervo is set to host the much-anticipated Range Rover Sardinia Cup, marking its return after a 14-year hiatus. The event will employ a new club-team format, featuring two boats per team, akin to the structure of the revamped Admiral’s Cup, with which the Sardinia Cup has historically alternated every two years. Organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) and supported by Range Rover, the regatta embodies values of performance, innovation, and exclusivity.

Racing will adhere to the IRC handicap system, categorising the fleet into Sardinia Cup Class 1 and Class 2 (SC1 & SC2) based on rating and size. Team composition will also reflect the nationality of the yacht club represented.

A total of 10 international teams have gathered in Porto Cervo, comprising 20 competitive boats crewed by top professionals, each team including a female sailor and a young sailor under 25. Notable participants include Silvio Arrivabene, Nic Asher, Dean Barker, and many others, showcasing a strong mix of talent.

Among the teams, the Royal Ocean Racing Club will enter with two teams, while Italy is represented by clubs such as the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. The Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia has entered the Ker 46 Lisa R and the Mat 12.20 Kuka, helmed by experienced sailors.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club’s entries include James Neville’s TP52 Ino Veritas with tactician Dean Barker, and Peter Harrison’s IRC 52 Jolt 3, the reigning Admiral’s Cup champion. Other teams include the Yacht Club Repubblica Marinara di Pisa, which will race with notable vessels such as the WallyRocket51 Rocket Nikka and the Fast 40+ Nola, and the Yacht Club de France featuring Spirit of Lorina 2 and ClubSwan 42 Raving Swan.

The competition promises to be fierce, with brisk Mistral winds expected in the early part of the week, transitioning to a north-easterly breeze later on. Following the official practice race, the skippers’ briefing and welcome cocktail are scheduled, with the first coastal race set for 2 June at 11 a.m. CEST, followed by a 150-nautical mile race from 3 to 4 June.

YCCS Commodore Andrea Recordati highlighted the significance of the Sardinia Cup’s return, expressing gratitude towards the competing yacht clubs and wishing fair winds to all participants, especially Team Django, representing YCCS.
