Paul Hameeteman is the 2026 Switch Global champion after holding his nerve in a high-pressure final day on Lake Garda, securing his first senior world title in a fleet packed with talent from SailGP, the America’s Cup, and Olympic sailing.

The 23-year-old Dutch sailor had led for much of the championship, but the title fight went down to the wire against Denmark’s Magnus Overbeck. The pair were level after the first two races of the final day, setting up a decisive battle with three races remaining.

With the pressure building, Hameeteman and coach Michiel Bakker worked through the numbers and developed a plan to regain control of the standings.

“After the first two races, we were very close on points again. Magnus is incredibly fast, and you cannot afford to ease off against him for a moment, because he is immediately right alongside you,” Hameeteman said.

Even after crossing the line with the needed results in races three and four of the day, there was no immediate celebration. The Dutchman had to wait for the official results to confirm what the calculations suggested: he was the new Switch Global champion.

“Results finally came in, and it was pure euphoria and relief,” he remarked.

With the title confirmed, Hameeteman could approach the final race without the pressure of the championship battle. His family watched from a boat on the water as he crossed the finish line, bringing an emotional end to a demanding week of racing.

The Switch Global Championship brought together sailors from across the high-performance sailing world, creating a competitive mix of experience from SailGP, the America’s Cup, Olympic classes, and wingfoiling.

Among the names on the start line were Magnus Overbeck, Italian sailors Massimiliano Antoniazzi and Mattia Cesana, Spanish Olympic 470 sailor Jordi Xammar, British ILCA specialist Finley Dickinson, and wingfoiling talent Sean Herbert.

Cesana, the defending Switch Global champion, is also part of the Italian SailGP team, while Antoniazzi helms Italy’s youth team for Luna Rossa. Overbeck had an additional edge in his rivalry with Hameeteman: the pair had been training partners on Lake Garda in the months leading up to the championship.

For Hameeteman, winning in such a diverse fleet made the result all the more significant.

The Switch is a single-handed foiling monohull, bringing high speeds and technical demands into a one-design format. With competitors using the same equipment, the emphasis shifts towards boat handling, tactical decisions, and execution on the racecourse rather than continual equipment development.

Hameeteman sees that format as one of the class’s biggest strengths, particularly when compared with development classes such as the Moth, where equipment innovation can push costs higher.

The world title marks a major milestone in a career that has taken a deliberate turn away from the Olympic pathway. Last November, Hameeteman ended his campaign towards the Los Angeles 2028 Games to focus entirely on the Switch.

Rather than relying on a large established programme, he built his campaign independently with support from friends and experienced specialists. Bakker coached him during the championship, while his brother Maart Hameeteman provided support from the coach boat.

“Winning this title is incredibly special. The way we achieved it together makes this victory incredible,” Hameeteman said.

The result underlines the opportunities emerging in high-performance foiling, where sailors can move between disciplines and test their skills against athletes with very different backgrounds.

“The Switch is an emerging foiling class. Everyone uses the same equipment, and the boat combines high speeds with ease of use,” he said. “If we want the Netherlands to play a role in the big leagues like SailGP or the America’s Cup alongside the Olympic Games, we need to build a strong foiling culture in our country.”

For Hameeteman, the title is both a personal breakthrough and a statement of intent: a successful independent campaign, a victory against a deep international fleet, and a step towards a broader future in high-performance foiling.
