Whitsunday Sailing Club has confirmed the dates for the 2027 Airlie Beach Race Week (ABRW), set to take place from 12-18 August. Sailors are encouraged to mark their calendars for this exciting event.
Registration will commence on Wednesday, 11 August, with a lay day scheduled for Sunday, 15 August, and the official presentation will occur on Wednesday, 18 August. Further details regarding entries and the Notice of Race will be communicated soon.
This year’s ABRW was sponsored by Jeanneau Yachts, presented by Mooloolaba Yacht Brokers. The event saw over 120 boats competing in ideal conditions on Pioneer Bay and around the Whitsunday Islands, renowned as a premier holiday and sailing destination.
Participants enjoyed a week filled with summer-like conditions, whale watching, dolphins, turtles, and dugongs, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display on the final night. The event not only attracts a passionate sailing community but also significantly benefits the local economy, drawing competitors and their families.
The event offers a variety of activities onshore, including live entertainment, food stalls, and family-friendly movie nights at the Whitsunday Sailing Club. Competitors relished the fully booked Changing Courses long lunch, featuring breathtaking views and delightful cuisine alongside the 74 Islands Distillery event.
Many sailors took the opportunity to contribute to local conservation efforts on lay day, assisting Ian and Annika Thomson in cleaning up the waters around the Whitsundays. Participants collected rubbish to support the Ocean Crusaders initiative while also gathering cans for the WSC junior sailing programs.
As the club prepares for the 39th edition of this signature event, the organisers are eager to welcome returning sailors and newcomers in 2027, including those who excelled in 2026. The return of competitors from New Zealand is also anticipated, with multiple boats expected to join the race.
Event Chairman Terry Archer expressed excitement about the upcoming year, noting the appreciation for returning yacht owners who participate year after year.
