Johnny Vincent’s Volvo 70 Pace has successfully completed the 50th anniversary RORC Round Britain and Ireland Race, securing Monohull Line Honours after an exhilarating journey. The race, known for its challenging course and diverse conditions, saw Pace cross the Royal Yacht Squadron finish line in Cowes at 04:17:31 BST on Sunday, 16 August, with an elapsed time of 6 days, 14 hours, 47 minutes, and 31 seconds.
The journey spanned 1,805 nautical miles, with the YB tracker recording a total of 2,113 nautical miles sailed, including strategic deviations after Black Rock and in the northern North Sea. Pace demonstrated remarkable speed, particularly off the west coast of Ireland, where it achieved impressive boat speeds of 26 and 27 knots, alongside a remarkable 486-nautical-mile run within 24 hours.
The final stretch of the race was notably complex, with Pace navigating various traffic separation schemes, oil and gas infrastructure, and wind farms. The crew executed a series of gybes in darkness, with a favourable tide aiding their passage through the Solent back to Cowes.
As of the latest updates, Pace is positioned for IRC Overall honours, pending the finish of other contenders like Antoine Magre’s Mach 50 Palanad 4. The corrected time for Pace is already established, adding to the anticipation of the overall race results.
Vincent expressed his deep sense of accomplishment, reflecting on the race as a significant personal journey. He noted the diverse conditions faced, from calm seas to vigorous winds, and praised the exceptional teamwork that contributed to their success.
Navigator Jules Salter, who has extensive experience in Volvo 70s, remarked on the unique nature of the race, describing it as a compilation of four distinct chapters that collectively formed an extraordinary adventure. He highlighted the importance of maximising speed while maintaining efficiency to navigate the course effectively.
The event, organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in conjunction with the Royal Yacht Squadron, brought together a competitive fleet, making it a remarkable occasion in the offshore sailing calendar.
