SailGP touches down on the Solent this weekend for the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix, running from July 25-26. This event marks the eighth stop of the 2026 season and opens a crucial European stretch leading to the Grand Final in Abu Dhabi.
Thirteen international teams will race in identical F50 foiling catamarans, achieving speeds over 100 km/h, with approximately 20,000 fans expected on Southsea Common.
The Bonds Flying Roos arrive with an 18-point lead after their fourth-place finish in Halifax, following a remarkable winning streak. Meanwhile, Los Gallos, the latest winners, are chasing closely behind. Defending champions Emirates Great Britain, currently in third, aim to impress the home crowd.
Portsmouth is set to host the first of four European summer events, continuing on to Sassnitz, Valencia, and Geneva. The competition in Portsmouth will be pivotal for teams looking to establish momentum for the remainder of the season.
SailGP has adopted group racing to maintain high-quality competition. The fleet is divided into two heats, with Portsmouth’s compact Solent course using this format to enhance racing excitement.
Group A consists of Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Italy, Denmark, and Brazil. Meanwhile, Group B includes Sweden, Switzerland, USA, Germany, France, and Great Britain.
Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team’s Martine Grael returns as the driver, aiming to improve the team’s position after a recent last-place finish.
As the season approaches its climax, teams are eager to build on successful results from the past. The stakes are high as all competitors seek to secure their spot in the Grand Final.
Fans can predict the top four teams in Sunday’s event for a chance to win USD $25,000. Racing starts at 1:30 a.m. AEST.
