The Gaffers return to Moreton Bay for the Vintage Yacht Regatta

The Queensland Cruising Yacht Club will once again host the Vintage Yacht Regatta from 17–19 July 2026, bringing together a unique fleet of classic timber yachts and the sailors who keep them sailing.

Affectionately known as the Gaffers, the event earned its nickname from the traditional gaff-rigged yachts that were once a common sight on Moreton Bay. Although the regatta now attracts a broader range of classic and vintage vessels, the name has endured and remains well known throughout the sailing community.

From beautifully restored classics to much-loved family cruisers, the regatta showcases an important part of Queensland’s boating history and provides a rare opportunity for the public to see these vessels both on the water and alongside the marina at Shorncliffe.

The regatta is open to boats designed or built more than 30 years ago, as well as other sailing craft that can reasonably be considered of a vintage design. Eligible vessels not wishing to compete are welcome to participate as part of a display at the Club or join the fleet on the water as spectators.

Queensland Cruising Yacht Club Sailing Chair Jack Morrison said the event continued to attract owners who are passionate about preserving traditional boats and the stories that come with them.

“The Vintage Yacht Regatta is about much more than racing. It’s an opportunity to bring together people who appreciate classic boats, traditional seamanship and the rich maritime history of Moreton Bay. Every boat has a story, and this event helps keep those stories alive for future generations.”

Festivities begin on Friday, 17 July, with competitor arrivals, registration and a briefing at Queensland Cruising Yacht Club from 6:30pm.

Racing takes place across Saturday and Sunday, with competitors contesting two days of around-the-cans racing.

The public is invited to visit the Club throughout the weekend to watch the fleet prepare for racing, enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner overlooking the marina, and soak up the regatta atmosphere.

Saturday evening will feature the Vintage Yacht Regatta Dinner and live music, providing an opportunity for competitors, supporters and visitors to come together and celebrate a day on the water.

The event concludes on Sunday afternoon with presentations and celebrations recognising the achievements of competitors across the weekend.

Husk Rum is a proud sponsor of the Vintage Yacht Regatta. Rum has long been associated with sailors and life at sea, making Husk a fitting supporter of an event that celebrates classic boats and Queensland’s maritime heritage.

The Queensland Cruising Yacht Club also thanks Northside Marine for its in-kind support through the provision of safety boats during the event.
