Scorching temperatures across Europe contrast with the idyllic conditions at the 44Cup Marstrand, where racing commenced on schedule at midday. A steady 10-12 knot northwesterly breeze from the North Sea provided perfect sailing weather, and teams faced a decision between hoisting the J1 or J2 sails.
The Black Star Sailing Team, led by Christian Zuerrer and tactician Cameron Dunn, thrived under these conditions. The Swiss crew, who made several changes this season, demonstrated their strong synergy, clinching victories in both races. In the first race, they rounded the top mark overlapped with Artemis Racing and maintained a lead in the second race, showcasing their impressive speed and tactics.
Zuerrer expressed satisfaction with their performance, stating, “It was a good day for us – we’ve never had two wins in a row. I’m pretty happy with the speed of the boat.”
Dunn elaborated on their strategy, noting their preference for the left side of the course during the first race, which paid off. However, they faced challenges in the third race, where tactical errors led to them finishing in seventh after being caught in traffic.
Artemis Racing, helmed by Torbjörn Törnqvist, also performed well, finishing the day with a 3-2-4. Törnqvist praised the racing conditions, remarking on the tight competition and expressing his enjoyment of the sailing experience, regardless of past near wins.
In the final race, local fans cheered as Swedish teams Artemis Racing and GeMera Racing led at the first top mark. GeMera Racing, currently leading the 2026 44Cup standings, ultimately overcame Artemis Racing, despite a last-leg mishap that left them sailing with a damaged kite.
After three races, the leaderboard is tightly contested, with four teams within a single point: Black Star Sailing Team and Artemis Racing are tied at nine points, followed closely by GeMera Racing and Team Charisma at ten points.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, Dunn anticipates different conditions with a shift in wind direction, which should affect the racing dynamics. Racing is scheduled to commence again at noon.
