Australian Sailing welcomes increased participation funding and top classification result

Australian Sailing has secured increased investment from the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) for participation programs, achieving the highest possible Play Well Classification Level of 10 out of 10. This funding is part of a total of $21.75 million allocated to 58 sporting organisations over the next 12 months, with Australian Sailing being one of 36 sports to receive a boost in recognition of its commitment to growing participation and enhancing experiences for sailors, volunteers, coaches, and officials across the nation.

CEO Malcolm Page OAM described the funding as a strong endorsement of the organisation’s vision for participation and the collaborative efforts of clubs, class associations, Discover Sailing Centres, volunteers, and staff throughout Australia. Page remarked, β€œTo be one of the 36 sports to receive an increase in Play Well funding, while also achieving the highest possible classification, is a fantastic outcome for sailing.”

ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM noted that Play Well funding supports National Sports Organisations in creating environments that provide positive experiences for participants. He emphasised that the initiative aims to make sport inclusive and welcoming, fostering stronger participation to build a thriving sports system that benefits all Australians.

A key highlight of the announcement was Australian Sailing’s impressive score of 88.25 per cent in the ASC’s Play Well Investment Assessment, which evaluates national sporting organisations across six categories, including:
– Connected Participants
– Participant Diversity Profile
– Quality of Experience
– Annual Plan Delivery
– System Contribution
– Stakeholder Engagement

The assessment revealed that sailing ranked eighth among all eligible sports in terms of participant experience.

The funding will support the implementation of the newly launched Participation Plan for Sailing in Australia, a comprehensive roadmap aimed at making sailing more accessible and flexible, with the goal of increasing participation through to 2032 and beyond. This plan outlines the collaborative approach of Australian Sailing, clubs, class associations, and Discover Sailing Centres to encourage more Australians to get on the water more often.

Australian Sailing expressed gratitude to the ASC for its continued partnership in facilitating opportunities for Australians to engage in sport and active recreation.
