Wedgetail and Balancing Act crowned champions of inaugural Brisbane to Bundaberg Yacht Race

The inaugural Brisbane to Bundaberg Yacht Race, organised by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, marked a significant event in the sailing calendar. David Rose’s Bundaberg Rum-sponsored Wedgetail achieved both Line Honours and overall IRC victory, while Tony Craner’s Port of Bundaberg-sponsored Balancing Act took home the ORCi, PHS, and Double-Handed titles.

The race commenced with an exciting start off Brisbane, featuring vibrant spinnakers and high hopes. However, it soon transformed into a tactical offshore challenge, requiring competitors to display patience and resilience in light winds. Crews faced long spells of drifting, with some boats struggling to maintain momentum or even moving backwards at times. The race tracker became essential as sailors navigated their way to Bundaberg, searching for breezes to gain an advantage.

Wedgetail showcased exceptional performance throughout the race, leading for significant portions before being the first to arrive in Bundaberg. The team celebrated their victory with the announcement of overall IRC honours based on corrected time calculations. Upon arrival, they were greeted by Her Excellency the Governor of Queensland, Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, and Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn, marking a celebratory end to the race.

David Rose expressed the challenges faced during the race, noting, “It was actually a massive slog… But it just shows you that anything can happen offshore.” He highlighted the crew’s determination to push through the tough conditions to secure their win, stating it was special to be the first winner of the race.

Balancing Act’s success was attributed to consistency and strategic decision-making, as Tony Craner and his crew effectively managed the unpredictable conditions. As the winners of the PHS division, they received the perpetual PHS trophy, a unique tug bell symbolising the maritime heritage of the race.

Allan Larkin’s Wide Bay Shipping Services-sponsored Noire was the sole multihull entry, successfully completing the race and claiming both the OMR and PHS Multihull titles.

The event was filled with memorable experiences, from stunning sunsets and marine wildlife sightings to camaraderie among crews. Notably, Noire’s crew showcased their culinary skills by hosting a barbecue lunch and preparing a lamb roast and sticky date pudding.

Becky Maloney from the Noire crew was awarded the Media Prize for her engaging updates and images shared during the race. Meanwhile, Anton Prange aboard Hitz 939 FM-sponsored Ignition made headlines by arriving first in Bundaberg, albeit under motor, bringing a festive spirit to the race village.

The presentation ceremony included notable attendees, including Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Patron Professor Graeme Nimmo RFD, who helped celebrate the race’s inaugural edition. Event organisers, volunteers, and sponsors received thanks for their contributions, with plans already underway for the next race in 2027.
