Olympic gold medallist James “Dick” Sargeant OAM leads the list of distinguished sailing community members honoured in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours. He received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his lifelong service to sailing, highlighted by his Olympic Gold in the 5.5 Metre class at Tokyo 1964, participation in two America’s Cup campaigns, and numerous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races, as well as decades of volunteer work.
Joining him is Associate Professor David Austin AM from Keppel Bay Sailing Club, recognised for his significant contributions to safety and medicine in sailing. He is a current member of Australian Sailing’s National Safety Committee.
Other notable recipients include Geoffrey Fader AM from the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania for his unwavering support of Junior and Sabot sailing, Robert Kucera AM, the former Commodore of Fremantle Sailing Club, Graeme Foale OAM for over 40 years of volunteer service in Tasmania, and Cornelis Steenland OAM, honoured for his work with youth aboard the sail-training ship South Passage.
Australian Sailing CEO Malcolm Page OAM expressed congratulations to the recipients, noting their substantial contributions to the sport. “These honours recognise the incredible depth of commitment that exists throughout our sailing community, from the grassroots to international sailing,” he said. Page acknowledged that each recipient has made a significant impact through their roles as competitors, volunteers, administrators, mentors, and leaders.
Additionally, Australian Sailing congratulates Mrs Elisabeth Janet Calvert-Jones AC for being awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia for her eminent service across various sectors. She is the wife of John Calvert-Jones AM, founder of the Australian Sailing Team Patrons Program.
The 2026 honours showcase the diverse ways individuals contribute to sailing, from elite competition to offshore safety, youth development, and club leadership, thereby ensuring the sport’s continued strength across Australia.
