East Coast Championships 2026 Set to Bring Australia’s Best Young Sailors to Sydney Harbour
Rose Bay, Sydney – June 2026
The NSW Optimist Association, in partnership with Woollahra Sailing Club, is set to host the 2026 East Coast Championships (ECC) on the stunning waters of Sydney Harbour during the King’s Birthday Long Weekend from Saturday 6 June to Monday 8 June 2026.
This three-day regatta will feature some of Australia’s most talented junior and youth sailors, competing across various fleets, including:
- Optimist Green Fleet
- Optimist Intermediate Fleet
- Optimist Open Fleet
- ILCA 4
- ILCA 6
- 29er
- 49er
Hosted by Woollahra Sailing Club in Rose Bay, competitors will benefit from world-class racing conditions at one of the world’s most iconic sailing venues. The event will feature multiple race courses across the harbour, ensuring thrilling and competitive racing for sailors of all ages and experience levels on traditional windward-leeward courses.
The 2026 East Coast Championships mark a significant milestone for Australian dinghy sailing. With 156 boats entered across seven fleets and an expected turnout of over 300 participants, including competitors, family members, coaches, officials, and spectators, this regatta is one of the largest junior and youth sailing events held in Sydney in recent years. Following the discontinuation of Sail Sydney’s dinghy racing programme, events of this scale have been limited, making the East Coast Championships an important addition to the Australian sailing calendar. This event highlights the strength of community sailing and the dedication of volunteers, clubs, and class associations to providing high-quality racing opportunities for young sailors.
Representatives from the NSW Optimist Association emphasised the importance of fostering pathways for participation, from introductory Green Fleet sailing through to high-performance youth classes.

The event showcases the depth of talent within the sport while creating an exciting championship experience for competitors, families, and supporters alike.”
The regatta is anticipated to generate considerable activity both on and off the water throughout the long weekend, uniting sailors, families, volunteers, and supporters from across the country to celebrate youth sailing at one of Australia’s premier sailing venues.
