Second leg of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec underway

The skippers competing in La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec have started the second leg from Vigo, Spain, to Pornichet, France. This 450-nautical-mile course poses strategic challenges right from the outset, with a tense atmosphere as the fleet departs the Galician coastline under tricky weather conditions. Tom Dolan (Kingspan) leads the pack, but competitors are eager to close the gap.

The initial hours of the race will see the 36 sailors contend with light winds and patches of calm, requiring patience and concentration. After a 90-minute coastal course, Adrien Hardy (Sans Nature, pas de Futur !) emerged as the leader at the Paprec mark. However, the light winds and potential for windless patches mean that even minor errors could have significant consequences.

As the fleet navigates north of Vigo, skippers must stay alert to wind changes and make astute tactical decisions. The progression is expected to be slow and technical, demanding full engagement from the sailors. Many competitors recall past experiences of grounding near the coast, reinforcing the need for caution.

The action is likely to remain intense through to the finish, with tactical sailing expected to outweigh sheer speed. In the lead-up to the race, several skippers shared their thoughts on the challenges ahead. Pierrick Letouzé (Normandy Offshore Program) noted the complexity of the weather forecasts, stating that patience will be essential.

Léo Bothorel (Décathlon) highlighted the significance of timing as the fleet approaches a depression system off the Spanish coast, warning of thunderstorms that could impact strategies. Titouan Mariley (ACTION ENFANCE – NO LIMIT) echoed concerns about the unpredictable nature of the leg, advising against frustration and emphasizing the potential for comebacks despite setbacks.

Marie Gendron (Kereis SNCF Voyageurs) expressed excitement for the light-wind conditions, while Erica Lush (Hope) anticipated significant gaps forming within the fleet. Hugo Le Clech (Mieux) predicted a strategic race, with fortunes likely to fluctuate among the competitors.

As skippers gear up for the challenges of this leg, the blend of strategy, patience, and adaptability will be crucial as they race towards Pornichet in the coming days.
