Tom Dolan (Kingspan) claims victory in Vigo

Tom Dolan (Kingspan) has claimed victory in the opening stage of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec, completing the race in 3 days, 20 hours, 21 minutes, and 36 seconds. This marks a triumphant return to the top of the podium for the Irish sailor, who last won in 2024. Dolan was greeted by the first rays of sunlight as he crossed the finish line off Cape Finisterre, with Loïs Berrehar (Banque Populaire) and Paul Morvan (Foricher – French Touch) rounding out the podium.

This stage posed significant challenges for all competitors, and they now have a brief 48 hours to regroup before heading to Pornichet for the second leg.

The Irishman’s Acceleration
At approximately 10:30 p.m. the previous night, Dolan executed a critical strategic move, positioning himself north of notable competitors like Berrehar and Paul Morvan. His exceptional boat speed allowed him to extend his lead consistently, resulting in a masterclass performance in sailing. Dolan reflected on his past experience in Vigo, where a wrist injury forced his retirement in 2025, stating, “This victory makes me feel a lot better about the place. I’ve just taken a great revenge.”

The Podium
Finishing 37 minutes and 34 seconds behind Dolan, Berrehar expressed a desire for redemption, noting his strong performance despite being outmatched. He remarked, “Tom was unbelievably good, but that’s going to have to stop. La Solitaire is still long, and I fully intend to go after it.” Morvan’s third-place finish is particularly notable as it marks his first podium result, finishing 40 minutes and 54 seconds behind Dolan. “There was real adrenaline at the end. I’m really happy with this result,” he said after the race.

The Veterans Deliver
Veterans Martin Le Pape (Paprec) and Nicolas Lunven (PRB) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, showcasing their extensive experience in handling the demanding conditions of the race. They completed the stage 50 minutes and 18 seconds, and 52 minutes and 59 seconds behind the leader.

Paul Loiseau, Best Rookie
First among the rookies, Paul Loiseau finished seventh overall, making a strong impression and highlighting his potential for future stages. In ninth place, Paul Cousin also demonstrated impressive skills, suggesting both young sailors could become key players in upcoming races.

Tom Dolan Wins the Vivi Trophy
Dolan also secured the Vivi Trophy, awarded to the first foreign sailor across the line, further solidifying his successful return to the competition.

Défi Paprec
In the Défi Paprec, Thomas Dinas and Eliott Coville excelled, winning the event and setting a precedent for future talents in offshore racing.

Stage Profile
The stage began with a challenging crossing of the English Channel, followed by demanding weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay. Dolan’s strategic positioning and speed allowed him to pull ahead as the race progressed, culminating in a decisive victory.
