One day to go before the start of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec

On Sunday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m., local sailor Guirec Soudée will kick off the 57th edition of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec. A fleet of 36 sailors will depart solo from Perros-Guirec, heading towards Vigo, Spain. This opening leg is expected to showcase a range of weather conditions, starting with moderate winds, followed by an active front from Monday, and ending with a calm zone as they approach Cape Finisterre.

Race Director Yann Château has indicated that this year’s race will be demanding and strategic, with unpredictable elements at play. The first leg will feature a coastal course from Perros-Guirec to Wolf Rock Lighthouse, then a long offshore stretch exceeding 430 nautical miles. The strategic choices made during this leg will be critical, especially with a frontal system expected to roll in between Monday and Tuesday.

The race is unique this year, as taking place in May provides sailors with one to two extra hours of daylight compared to the usual September schedule, which could influence their performance.

Among the competitors are several familiar names alongside new talent. English-speaking sailors include Tom Dolan (Kingspan), Ellie Driver (STEM on the Startline), Oliver Hill (Nautica by Ollie Hill Racing), and Erica Lush (Hope). First-timer Joss Creswell (digiLab) aims to make his mark in this challenging race.

Driver, returning for her second year, feels more prepared and eager to improve upon her past performance. Hill, while dealing with higher expectations as a previous winner, is focused on avoiding mistakes. Creswell aims to maintain a light-hearted approach while navigating through the rigours of the race.

Lush, the first American to potentially complete two Solitaires, has faced significant challenges but is confident heading into the race. Defending champion Dolan will be looking to maintain his status as a benchmark for the field.

Additionally, six duos in the Défi Paprec will embark on the same route, aiming to inspire future generations of sailors.

Fans can follow the start on various platforms, including the race’s website, France 3 Bretagne, and social media channels. A virtual edition of the race will also take place on Virtual Regatta, allowing participants to experience the race from home.

This year’s edition of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec promises to be an exciting and unpredictable challenge for all competitors.
