Australia has solidified its position in the 2026 Rolex SailGP Championship with a dominant performance at the Apex Group Bermuda Sail Grand Prix, securing their second consecutive event win by triumphing over Los Gallos and Germany by Deutsche Bank in a tense final.
The Flying Roos delivered a masterclass in tactical sailing, taking control from the outset and maintaining a steady lead around the racecourse. Tom Slingsby, the Australian crew’s skipper, expressed satisfaction with the team’s synergy, stating, “The team was unbelievably well together – we were jelling, and it’s amazing to get a result like that.” This victory marks their third title in the 2026 season, extending their overall championship lead to 10 points.
The final race showcased a lighter breeze, which tested the crews’ tactical skills. The Australians executed their strategy flawlessly, while a misstep from the Spanish team, who dropped off the foils midway, hindered their chances. This allowed the Flying Roos to finish comfortably ahead, reinforcing their reputation as the championship’s most dominant force.
Germany by Deutsche Bank also made headlines, securing their first final appearance of the season. The team, led by Erik Heil, demonstrated impressive consistency throughout the weekend despite challenging conditions.
Los Gallos, who had entered the final day tied with Australia on points, began the championship Sunday strongly, winning race five and securing their 20th SailGP race victory. However, their inconsistency in other races ultimately cost them the championship lead.
In addition to the competitive racing, the event highlighted the resilience of DS Automobiles Team France, who managed to remain competitive despite an injury to their wing trimmer, Glenn Ashby. The French team adapted quickly, showcasing their depth and skill by achieving multiple podium finishes.
Looking ahead, the next event in the Rolex SailGP Championship will take place in New York. The Bonds Flying Roos will carry their momentum into this next challenge, aiming to maintain their lead and continue their successful run in the championship.
