52 Super Series – Puerto Portals – Day 2

Double bullet day for Alkedo but consistent Provezza in pole position in Puerto Portals

After four races at the Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week, Ergin Imre’s Turkish flagged Provezza leads the fleet with consistent performances earning a total of seven points over two days. Provezza’s crew, featuring a strong Argentinian duo of Cole Parada and Santi Lange, is currently six points ahead of Italy’s Alkedo, which climbed to second place thanks to two victories today.

The first race of the day saw ideal sailing conditions with winds reaching up to 16 knots, while the second race faced challenges due to high clouds and reduced thermal breezes, leading to a shortened race at the second windward mark.

Provezza showcased impressive speed and strategic sailing throughout the day. Tactician Cole Parada expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their focus on consistency as a critical factor in the competitive 52 SUPER SERIES environment. He noted the importance of good starts and effective use of wind shifts and bends.

Alkedo’s Cameron Appleton, who experienced a difficult first day with two ninth-place finishes, was pleased with their turnaround, emphasising the significance of prioritising strong starts and solidifying their positions at key points in the race.

Meanwhile, the new Swedish team on Trinity encountered setbacks, including a main halyard issue that forced them to miss the first race. Ed Baird, Trinity’s tactician, reported self-inflicted problems that hindered their chances of maintaining a competitive position.

Tak Okura’s Sled faced challenges as well, dropping to ninth place after Paprec’s interference during the first race. Despite this, they remain competitive with the same aggregate points as Alkedo.

With thunderstorms forecasted for Thursday, the next race is scheduled to start at midday.
