Brisbane Race Week presented by Porsche Centre Brisbane kicked off at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron with a windy and tactical opening day on Moreton Bay. The regatta’s starting format, the Green Island Lap ‘hot lap’, established early benchmarks as division leaders began to emerge.
In the Monohull Performance division, Tool Time, skippered by Stephen O’Brien, took the lead, while Ambition, helmed by Helen McDouall and Kim Salthouse, topped the Monohull Cruising division. Both boats showcased strong performances amid challenging conditions.
For elapsed time achievements, Kerb set the standard in the Performance division, with Dog House leading the Multihull fleet and Recherche gaining ground in the Cruising category.
A steady breeze challenged competitors, with wind speeds hitting 28 knots on the eastern side of Green Island. Competitors faced complex decisions, balancing pressure and timing to make the most of variable conditions. Some described the experience as a “hairy hot lap.”
Notably, Balancing Act, skippered by Tony Craner, clinched the Green Island estimate honours by accurately predicting their speed and distance. Craner noted his instincts paid off, estimating their time at 51:43, just 30 seconds off their actual finish.
Race Officer Paul Bolton remarked that the day delivered on the event’s goals, highlighting the importance of decision-making and crew understanding of performance. Bolton communicated with all teams, noting their positive experiences as a crucial aspect of the regatta’s success.
With the first day concluded, preparations were underway for Day 2, which would introduce passage racing and include off-the-beach divisions. Nearly 50 boats were expected to participate as Brisbane Race Week gained momentum, with racing commencing again on Moreton Bay.
