NSW Optimist Interclub 2026

Woollahra, NSW — The NSW Optimist Interclub 2026 is set to commence this weekend at Woollahra Sailing Club on Sunday, 3 May. Now in its third year, this volunteer-run regatta continues to grow in popularity, bringing together over 100 junior sailors from clubs across New South Wales. The event remains free to enter, promoting accessibility to young athletes from diverse backgrounds.

Competitors, aged between 8 and 15, will race in the Optimist class, which is an internationally recognised entry-level dinghy that has propelled many elite sailors into their careers.

Throughout the regatta, participants will take part in a series of short-course races designed to challenge their boat handling, tactical decision-making, and sportsmanship. The focus is on competitive excellence and nurturing foundational sailing skills in a supportive environment.

Event organisers anticipate strong fleet numbers and a high standard of racing, encouraged by favourable autumn conditions predicted for Sydney Harbour. Spectators can expect thrilling on-water action along with a lively atmosphere at the Woollahra Sailing Club.

According to an event spokesperson, “The Interclub is all about participation, learning, and building connections between young sailors. Keeping the event volunteer-run and free to enter is central to what makes it so special.”

This Interclub also provides an essential stepping stone for sailors looking toward state and national competition, offering valuable race experience early in their sailing careers.

The 2026 Interclub series will feature future events hosted by Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and Hunter Hill Sailing Club, reflecting the generosity of the participating clubs in supporting grassroots sailing throughout NSW.

Additionally, the event is backed by sponsors including Ronstan, Boatcrewgear.com, North Sails, White Bay Marine Park, Vaikobi, NB Sailsports, and Rooster Australia, who are contributing an array of gifts and prizes for competitors.

Racing is scheduled to kick off from late morning on Sunday, preceded by a briefing for competitors. Family members, supporters, and the local community are encouraged to attend and support the sailors.
