World Sailing Nations Cup returns in 2027

World Sailing has announced that the 2027 World Sailing Nations Cup will take place in Cherbourg, France, at the Cherbourg Yacht Club. This event marks a return to the city after a seven-year hiatus, capitalising on its rich history of hosting match racing events, including the 2021 Women’s Match Racing World Championships and various French National Youth and Women’s championships.

The tournament’s structure is designed to encourage global participation, featuring a pyramid of club and national championships leading up to this international competition. For the 2027 edition, up to 10 teams in both the Open and Women’s divisions will be invited to the Grand Final, with selection based on regional competitions.

Scheduled from 6-11 September 2027, more details and the Notice of Race will be published soon.

World Sailing Vice-President Cory Sertl remarked, “The Nations Cup is a celebration of national pride and a proven breeding ground for the future legends of our sport. Its return re-establishes a vital, cost-effective international platform for sailors and Member National Authorities, expanding the reach of match racing and inspiring a new generation of competitors.”

Maxime Mesnil, Director of the Yacht Club de Cherbourg, expressed enthusiasm for hosting the event again, recalling the success of the 2021 Women’s Match Racing Championship. He stated, “We are proud to be part of the Nation’s Cup once again, especially since it has a special meaning to me, as I won the last edition in 2019 in San Francisco.”

Olivier Gosselin, President of the Yacht Club de Cherbourg, emphasised the club’s commitment to meeting and exceeding the expectations associated with hosting this prestigious event. He stated, “Hosting the 2027 Nation’s Cup is both a privilege and a challenge. We aim to prove once again that the Yacht Club of Cherbourg is a leading venue for national and international events.”

The Nations Cup, initiated in 1991, uniquely pits nations against each other, determining the Open and Women’s world champion in match racing. It has a reputation for developing global talent and creating pathways to elite competition, with many participants advancing to the America’s Cup, the World Match Racing Tour, and the Olympic Games.

Esteemed past participants include world-renowned sailors such as Mathieu Richard (FRA), Anna Tunnicliffe (USA), and many others, demonstrating the event’s significant impact on the sailing world.

The last edition saw 19 teams from 13 countries competing, with France emerging victorious in both divisions.
