Dominant win for Dickson at 15th Ficker Cup

Scotty Dickson of Long Beach Yacht Club demonstrated exceptional skill and command at the 15th Ficker Cup, achieving his 15th title in this prestigious event held in Long Beach. The event took place over three days of intense competition on the Congressional Cup Stadium Course.

Leadership came early for Dickson, as he completed the first day with an impressive 6–1 record. He maintained this momentum, finishing the round-robin phase with a total of 11 wins, solidifying his top position heading into the knockout rounds. In the semi-finals, Dickson and his Dickson Racing Team, supported by KZ Companies, triumphed with a decisive 3–0 victory over Sweden’s Theo Westerlind. The final saw Dickson face Oscar Engström (SWE), concluding with another 3–0 win, thus securing the coveted title.

Engström claimed the second position after defeating Christopher Weis (USA) in their semi-final encounter, while Weis secured third place with a 2–0 victory over Westerlind in the petit final.

With their outstanding performances, both Dickson and Engström earned invitations to the upcoming 61st Congressional Cup, a notable event in the World Match Racing Tour calendar.

The Ficker Cup trophy was awarded to Dickson and his crew by Deon McDonald, daughter of Bill Ficker, the event’s namesake.

Tom Camp, Chairman of the Congressional Cup, expressed pride in Dickson’s performance, highlighting the significance of his achievement and the standards of excellence represented by the club.

The three-day event featured competitive racing and a diverse field of international participants. After a closely contested second day, the semi-final competitors were decided, culminating in an exciting last-gasp match where Engström prevailed over Nicole Breault (USA).

On the final day, strong winds exceeding 20 knots challenged the crews, with adjustments made to sail configurations to manage the conditions effectively. The mark-set boats utilized by LBYC performed excellently despite the difficulties posed by the weather.

The community showed great interest, with the viewing area at Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier filling up with fans as the races unfolded. Each day’s proceedings were also live-streamed globally, with commentary from Ryan Sanders and guests.

The Ficker Cup, a Grade 2 event on the World Match Racing Tour, celebrates the legacy of Bill Ficker, who famously led *Intrepid* to victory in the 1970 America’s Cup and later won the 1974 Congressional Cup. The motto “Ficker is Quicker” remains a hallmark of the event and the competitive spirit it fosters.

Furthermore, the Ficker Cup acts as a qualifying event for the Congressional Cup, known as the “granddaddy” of match racing in North America, which kicks off on April 29 and runs through May 3, 2026. Racing is open to the public, and all are invited to witness some of the world’s top match racers compete for glory in Long Beach.
