Antigua Sailing Week – Final Day

26 April 2026: Antigua – English Harbour – A pleasant breeze from the southeast greeted participants on the final leg of Antigua Sailing Week, marking a fitting end to the event. The race began at Ffryes Beach with a 10-knot wind, and although competitors encountered a humid Caribbean pressure system, the breeze picked up to 18-20 knots later, complemented by swells of 6-10 feet offshore.

In CSA Class 3, Paul Bennett, sailing on the second-place finisher Caipirinha, highlighted the challenging start but noted the improvement as they moved beyond Pelican Island. “Some competitors reached while others were directly into the wind, resulting in varying conditions even among close boats”, he explained, underscoring the day-long shifting winds.

Race officer Chris Mansfield orchestrated a course that allowed competitors to circumnavigate Antigua. He voiced enthusiasm at seeing boats that had struggled earlier in the week performing exceptionally well in the stronger winds. Participants like Westwind and Sete Mares injected excitement into the race.

The finishing sprint in CSA Class 1 was particularly thrilling, with Eira and Ilios crossing the line a mere second apart, showcasing the fierce competition present all week. Meanwhile, the cruising fleet, including Mystic Lee, opted for a more leisurely pace, savouring the island’s beauty and indulging in activities like snorkelling along the way. Crew member Rob Britts reflected on a delightful day filled with exploration and stunning views.

As the boats returned to Nelson’s Dockyard, participants were welcomed with live music and local rum, with excitement building for the final prizegiving ceremony.
