The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta kicks off

Visitors to Nelson’s Dockyard were treated to a blend of history and maritime elegance during the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. The dockyard buzzed with activity, as a fleet of classic yachts prepared for competition amid the stunning Georgian architecture, showcasing polished brightwork and intricate rigging.

While judges evaluated the vessels for the Concours d’Elegance, nine sailors embarked on a single-handed race, demonstrating their seamanship skills in solitude. From the 70-foot schooner Magnolia to the 30-foot Blue Peter, each skipper set sail with only a silent safety officer accompanying them.

In the Small Classics class, 32’ Paloma clinched victory with a time of 58:10, followed by Ellamia and Arro. The 37-foot Falmouth Working Boat Arro, piloted by Mark and Loz Cann, has a legacy to uphold after winning the best dressed accolade in the past.

In the Large Classics division, Paul Deeth’s Petrana won the race with a swift 45:40. Magnolia followed in 51:01, with Ostwind concluding in 1:15:09. Meanwhile, Blue Peter secured the win in the Modern Classics class, finishing at 47:56, with Tangaroa just behind at 55:10.

Antiguan yacht Freya, helmed by Olympic sailor Karl James, won in the Spirit of Tradition category amid steady 15-knot winds, hinting at promising conditions for the races ahead.

The largest boat to win this race was the 114-foot schooner Ashanti IV, victorious in 2018. Unfortunately, skipper Kalle Ebner could not compete this time due to an ankle injury.

Celebrations commenced at the Crew Welcome Party held at Boom! restaurant, as crews prepared for the first races of the regatta while managing potential hangovers from festivities.

As the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta unfolds, participants embrace a spirit of community, camaraderie, and a shared love for classic sailing, making it a highlight of the maritime calendar.
