SailGP – Rio is unlike anywhere we’ve raced before – here’s why

SailGP is set to make its mark in Rio de Janeiro with the ENEL Rio Sail Grand Prix, promising intense competition and thrilling racing on Guanabara Bay. This venue is noted for its stunning scenery and challenging conditions due to variable winds and significant tidal influences, making it a tactical battlefield for participants.

Competing sailors include Olympians, with 14 medalists from the Rio 2016 Olympics participating. Prominent among them is Martine Grael, the first female driver in SailGP and a local hero, who grew up racing in these waters. Her experience and local knowledge could provide significant advantages in this challenging environment.

Guanabara Bay’s picturesque setting, featuring iconic landmarks like Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain, enhances the excitement of the event. As teams prepare, the unpredictable nature of the conditions is sure to contribute to an unforgettable competition.
