The GLOBE40 is delivering another thrilling contest in Leg 5 between Valparaiso and Recife. The CREDIT MUTUEL team of Ian Lipinski and Antoine Carpentier, initially leading by up to 612 miles near Cape Horn, saw their advantage drastically reduced to just 20 miles in the 02:00 rankings. The loss of nearly 80 miles occurred due to stalling in a windless zone after rounding Capo Frio close to Rio de Janeiro.
This unexpected shift in fortune has caught the French crew off-guard, despite their experienced navigation. They now face a fierce battle, contending with every mile and gust of wind. This edition of the GLOBE40 has been filled with suspenseful scenarios, including a 9-minute finish gap in Reunion Island and a tie in Valparaiso, now adding to the excitement of a comeback by another team.
The Belgian team, after rounding Cape Horn, is strategically positioned as they observe the struggles of their competitors. This leg across the South Atlantic presents relentless hazards and fluctuating conditions, challenging the nerve of every skipper. With approximately 700 miles remaining before reaching Recife, a tense competition is anticipated as teams approach the finish.
In the Classic Class40 pointus division, the FREE DOM team continues to set the pace, maintaining a strong lead over BARCO BRASIL, which faces competition from WILSON in second place. The Réunion-based team has rebounded impressively after past challenges faced during their Pacific crossing. Meanwhile, JANGADA RACING and WHISKEY JACK remain closely ranked among the Class40s, showing remarkable competitiveness with only 120 miles separating the fleet over 5,000 miles sailed since departing Chile.
Finally, the NEXT GENERATION team from Germany is set to join the competition for the final stretch, having recently arrived in Recife from Cape Town.
