Diego Botín and Florian Trittel, celebrated sailors at the pinnacle of their sport, have exciting plans. In October 2025, they claimed the one title previously missing from their impressive record: the world championship gold medal in the 49er class, shortly after their victory at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This championship marked their return to Olympic-class competition, achieved after a year-long break, having dedicated only the last two months to intensive 49er training.
The duo excelled not just in the Olympics but also on the global stage, competing in the SailGP circuit with the Spain SailGP Team, where they secured the top position in Season 4 after defeating Australia and New Zealand in the finals, two weeks prior to the Olympic regatta in Marseille. This remarkable season earned them the 2024 World Sailor of the Year award.
As they pivot towards the future, Botín and Trittel are gearing up for the Olympic cycle leading to Los Angeles 2028. In 2026, they will begin their campaign with the French team K-Challenge for the America’s Cup, although they will forgo competing in 49er regattas that season but maintain training in the class.
In 2027, both will merge their efforts, returning to 49er competition at the World Championship in Gdynia, Poland, the first opportunity for Olympic qualification spots for Los Angeles 2028. After the America’s Cup concludes in summer 2027, they will fully focus on their 49er Olympic campaign.
Expressing their motivations, Diego Botín stated, “The America’s Cup represents an enormous professional challenge and a huge opportunity to grow as sailors. We feel that we still have much to offer in the 49er. The drive to repeat our success from Paris in Los Angeles propels us. Combining both projects will enhance our skills as sailors.” Florian Trittel added, “We’re coming off an incredible run, winning SailGP Season 4, Olympic gold, and then the 49er World Championship, which was the title we were missing. Now it’s time to evolve and tackle new challenges while keeping our sights on Olympic glory again in 2028.” They also confirmed their commitment to continue in SailGP as they prepare for the Cup, ensuring they return fully focused on the 49er after the events in 2027.
