Sydney SailGP podium streak ends for the Flying Roos amid unusually challenging conditions

It was a tough day at the office for the BONDS Flying Roos, who faced exceptionally light, non-foiling conditions during the KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix, resulting in their first missed podium appearance since the league’s inception in 2019.

The team entered the final day almost guaranteed a place in the Podium Final, needing only a mid-fleet finish in the final qualifying race to secure progression. However, the day proved challenging with fleet race finishes of sixth, sixth, and tenth, ending with a fifth overall.

Tom Slingsby, driver and CEO, took responsibility for the result, admitting to decision-making errors despite strong boat handling from the crew. “It’s frustrating. We were in a really good position even going into the last race, but we had a shocking final fleet race. We also had some pretty poor results earlier in the day,” he stated.

The U.S. SailGP Team ultimately won the event, with Emirates GBR taking second place and Spain’s Los Gallos finishing third.

Despite the disappointment, the BONDS Flying Roos leave the event sitting second in the overall 2026 Rolex SailGP Championship standings, with strong performances ensuring they remain among the frontrunners.

Attention now turns to the Enel Rio Sail Grand Prix on April 11-12, as the BONDS Flying Roos look to reset and rebuild momentum heading into the Americas leg of the season.
