Victorian women keelboat sailors are gearing up for the International Women’s Day celebrations on 8 March, with a variety of events planned across clubs. These align with the IWD 2026 theme, “Balance the Scales”, advocating for the safety and empowerment of all women and girls.
Australian Sailing aims for female participation in sailing to reach 50% by 2032. Recent surveys indicate a gradual increase in female participation, from 33% in 2023 to 35% in 2024, though keelboat sailing remains significantly lower at 29%. This highlights the need for enhanced engagement and opportunities to cultivate the sport among women.
A range of activities are scheduled for March 2026. On Sunday, 1 March, the Sandringham Yacht Club will host the Women in Sailing Challenge as part of Day 2 of the Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series, featuring windward/leeward races and a longer race for female helms.

On Monday, 2 March, the SYC Women’s Development Program will partner with ORCV KISS ALIVE and RMYS for a forum titled “Pathways to Balance the Scales”, featuring an interview with keelboat owner and offshore sailor Sophie Snijders.

On Thursday, 5 March at 7:00 pm AEDT, Australian Sailing will host a webinar titled “Balancing the Scales,” featuring young sailor Tash Bryant, who holds a lead role in the Australian SailGP crew.
Saturday, 7 March will see women sailors participating in the Marlay Point Overnight Race at the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club, where a new all-female crew trophy division was introduced in 2025. The race will conclude on 8 March, spotlighting women’s skills and dedication.
On Tuesday, 10 March, Mornington Yacht Club will celebrate IWD 2026 with stories of sailing and leadership, featuring a panel of influential women moderated by MYC Youth Captain, Rose Carlson.
From 14-15 March, the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria will host discussions on women’s health and re-sail the Val Hodge Trophy race, originally postponed due to weather.
These seven female-focused events throughout March provide opportunities for connection, learning, and celebration. Participation is encouraged since visibility and representation are crucial in balancing the scales towards equality.
