80th Rolex Sydney Hobart underway

Defending Line Honours champion LawConnect took an early lead out of Sydney Heads, but Master Lock Comanche ultimately led the fleet in the 2025 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, navigating down the New South Wales coast. At 1300 AEDT, LawConnect crossed the starting line amidst tough competition from Master Lock Comanche and the US entry Lucky.

A notable surprise came from the New York Yacht Club’s 88 footer Lucky, which remains in close pursuit two hours into the race.

Tragedy struck early when Bruce Tardrew’s Yendys withdrew before the start, with its backstay breaking just prior to the 10-minute Warning Signal. Crew members expressed disbelief over the unfortunate turn of events.

Meanwhile, SHK Scallywag, helmed by David Witt, performed a 720-degree penalty turn offshore to address a potential protest declared by the Race Committee. Additionally, CYCA’s Sumatra, under skipper Shane Diethelm, paused racing to resolve a hydraulic issue but aims to continue once the problem is fixed.

The fleet of 128 vessels is currently battling strong southerly winds and significant swells along the route. Organisers have cautioned sailors about the challenging conditions that will be cold, wet, and bumpy.

Remembering the victims of the recent Bondi terror attack, several yachts scattered rose petals as they passed Bondi Beach during the race.

As the fleet continues its journey down the NSW and Victorian coast and across Bass Strait to Storm Bay, the 100-foot maxis may finish within two days, assuming favourable conditions. However, this year’s weather is not likely to yield a record time.
