Gian Andrea Stragiotti and Suofeiya Li recorded unbeaten days as Formula Kite athletes began their Youth Sailing World Championship campaigns on day three in Vilamoura.
All 11 events saw action on the same day for the first time in the competition so far, making for plenty of movement on the leaderboards. There were also contrasts in the conditions, as lighter winds than on Tuesday, coupled with a 180-degree switch in the wind direction, required racers to adapt quickly.
Male Formula Kite: Stragiotti sets the tone
Switzerland’s Gian Andrea Stragiotti, the U19 European Formula Kite champion, made an ideal start to his bid for Youth World gold, winning all three races on the opening day for his class. He currently holds a 10-point advantage, leading the first two races from start to finish. New Zealand’s Toby Wigglesworth trails in second, while Israel’s Carmel Avisar and Spain’s Carlos Espi Plat sit equal on points in third.
Female Formula Kite: Li wins three
China’s Suofeiya Li matched Stragiotti’s performance with three wins in her category, gaining a significant lead of 12 points over Great Britain’s Emma Rennie. Poland’s Karolina Jankowska and France’s Tylia Louber follow closely behind.
Male/Mixed 420: Tight at the top
The Ukrainian duo Sviatoslav Madonich and Dmytro Karabadzhak lead the male/mixed 420 class on countback from Israel’s Ziv Shtub and Loya Sheffler, both on five points. Shtub and Sheffler managed to secure top two finishes in all of Wednesday’s races. Madonich noted, “It was a tough day, but we enjoyed interesting races.”
Female 420: ‘Hard work paying off’ for Brits
Great Britain’s Sabine Potter and Merle Nieuwland are currently leading the 420 competition with consistent finishes. Nieuwland expressed satisfaction in adapting to varying conditions, highlighting their hard work.
Male/Mixed 29er: Polish pair hold narrow lead
The male/mixed 29er crews completed four races with Poland’s Szymon Kolka and Bartosz Zmudzinski in first place, followed closely by France’s Nolann Huet Des Aunay and Titouan Gresset. Zmudzinski remarked on the challenging conditions but was happy to maintain competitiveness.
Female 29er: World champions share summit
Reigning champions Antonina Puchowska and Alicja Dampc of Poland moved to the lead after winning consecutive races, tying with the British pair Lila Edwards and Amelie Hiscocks on points.
Nacra 15: Nothing to split top two
In the Nacra 15 category, France’s Marius Praud and Emilie Mansouri are tied with Italy’s Lorenzo Sirena and Alice Dessy for the top spot, both having claimed race wins.
Male ILCA 6: Coates on the charge
David Coates leads the ILCA 6 standings after finishing first, second, and sixth over the course of the day. Czechia’s Jiri Tomes is in pursuit just four points back.
Female ILCA 6: De Tomas on top
Spaniard Irene de Tomas leads the female ILCA 6 division, showcasing her consistency with her finishes.
Female iQFOiL: Falcioni in front
In the female iQFOiL division, Italy’s Medea Falcioni is at the top after winning her heats, while Turkey’s Nurhayat Guven follows close behind.
Male iQFOiL: Rajuan on a roll
For the male iQFOiL racers, Israel’s Peleg Rajuan remains dominant after securing two heats, alongside Italy’s Mattia Saoncella. Australia’s Rory Meehan, who clocked two thirds and a first, rounds out the top three on 16 points.
