Ambrogio Beccaria’s Allagrande Mapei Racing team achieved a remarkable victory in Leg 4 of The Ocean Race 2025, winning in Genova, Italy on September 3, 2025. Beccaria, alongside his all-French crew, completed the 600-nautical mile leg from Nice, France in two days, eight hours, 41 minutes, and 14 seconds, finishing at 23:42:14 UTC.
The victory marked a significant personal milestone for Beccaria, who had dreamed of winning in his adopted home. “I always want to win every leg, but this one was special because the finish was in Italy,” he remarked. The team improved their performance from third place in the previous leg and aimed high, pushing to secure the win.
Finishing second was Yoann Richomme’s French entry, Team Paprec Arkéa, while the overall race leader, Paul Meilhat and his Biotherm team, took third place in this leg.
The race commenced with the fleet navigating upwind along the Côte d’Azur towards a scoring gate off Monaco, where Biotherm led and collected points. The night presented challenges with light winds, but the top teams managed to stay competitive. Holcim – PRB led the fleet through the Strait of Bonifacio, capitalising on stronger winds that propelled them forward.
Despite facing a power outage that left Allagrande Mapei sailing without instrumentation for an hour, the team regained their lead after passing the Italian island of Elba. They rounded the western waypoint off Alassio two miles ahead of their closest rivals, Paprec Arkéa and Biotherm.
As the fleet returned across the gulf, Allagrande Mapei struggled in lighter winds, allowing Paprec Arkéa to close the gap to just eight miles. However, Beccaria and his crew maintained their composure and navigated into a fresh breeze, extending their lead once more to secure victory.
Beccaria expressed gratitude for the crew’s efforts, especially after overcoming setbacks earlier in the race. “I am really happy for all of the people who have worked on this project. Everybody thought we would be out of the race, but now we have even won the leg in Genova. It’s huge, it’s wonderful,” he said.
Richomme acknowledged the competitive nature of the race and expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, while the race continues with the remaining boats still on course.
