Melges 24 Australian Championship for Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie Yacht Club (LMYC) is excited to announce it will be hosting the 2019 Accru Melges 24 Australian Championship from 12-15 March.

The Club has had a long association with the Melges 24 class, running several state and national championships it over the years.

LMYC Sailing Administrator, Ross Ahren, will oversee the event which will be preceded by the NSW Championships from 9-10 March 2019.

Title sponsor, Accru Felsers Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, has many clients in the sports and leisure space and a 30-year association with the sailing industry and has supported various sailing teams and individuals and marine businesses.

The company has also generously sponsored the Nixon family Melges 24 team in local and overseas competitions for the last eight years.

Lake Macquarie sailor and Australian Melges 24 Treasurer, Dave Young welcomes all Melges 24 sailors to the new-look LMYC: “Lake Macquarie Yacht Club has undergone major renovations over the past six months and is in a good position to host a great event in the perfect sailing conditions that Lake Macquarie has to offer,” he said.

“We are looking forward to offering reciprocal hospitality that the South Australians and Victorians have offered us in the last couple of years. Good luck to all.”

The event is expected to draw a large contingent of competitors from South Australia, where the nationals were very successfully held last year in Port Lincoln. South Australians dominated last year's podium on local waters, with Sandy Higgins (Scorpius) winning from Robin Deussen (Red Mist), and 14 foot skiff specialist Dave Alexander (The Farm).

NSW will also have good representation, with past Australian champion, Andy Wharton (Acrewed Interest) competing, along with Melges Asia Pacific Managing Director Heath Walters (Roger That) with his young family team.

The Accru team of Kevin and Glenda Nixon will also be returning after mainly competing in North America for the last few years.
