The annual Old Buffers Day at Manly 16s has gained additional significance with the introduction of the Hugh Treharne Trophy, commemorating the late America’s Cup-winning tactician and esteemed Manly sailor. The trophy was unveiled on Saturday by Treharne’s family, preceding the 2026 Old Buffers Day race.
Clare Hozack returned to her former club to secure the scratch win aboard Red Pumps Red, sailing alongside crewmates Hugh and Jamie Stodart. This event fosters connections between former sailors and the latest generation, facilitating the transfer of knowledge and skills while celebrating the camaraderie of sailing.
This year’s Old Buffers Day event featured twenty-two boats competing over three laps in a friendly nor’easter. Clare remarked on the significance of winning the Treharne Trophy, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to participate each year and reconnect with the timeless spirit of the Manly 16s.
Jeanine, the widow of Hugh, expressed during her speech how the trophy serves as a fitting tribute, allowing future generations to honour Hugh’s legacy within the club. She conveyed the joy of participating in a cherished gathering with close friends and the importance of commemorating Hugh’s contributions to sailing.
The results concluded with Barnabas Building (Adam Beashel, Rob Napper, Joel Beashel) finishing second, followed by Fluid (Clint Bowen, Chad Beeby, Dave Burkett) in third place. Hugh’s son Robbie also participated, finishing 12th on Imagine Signage. Altis (Gavin Cooke, Phil Cooke, Rob Grueter) took home the handicap victory, followed by Australian Sailing Team (David Doyle, Keizo Tomoshima, Daniel Links) and Buckingham Marine (Rob Stenta and sons Matt and Chris).
