The Sofía crowns its first champions

The ORC, One Design and Hansa 303 classes concluded their participation in the 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels with a day remaining, as strong winds in the Bay of Palma led to the cancellation of the final day’s scheduled races. The competition for Olympic classes is set to commence on Monday, 30 March.

Completing three full days of racing for the Hansa 303 and two for the One Design classes, competitors in the ORC classes endured one of two planned days before the event was forced to conclude due to inclement conditions.

In the ORC 0-2 category, victory was claimed by Haltbroken, helmed by Germany’s Michael Berghorn; in ORC 3, the title went to Bitxet, skippered by Antoni Cavaller from Menorca; Lampo Rosso took the victory in ORC 4-5, with Joan Jofre at the helm; and Abracadabra won the Sportboat class under the guidance of Mark Sadler. Among the One Design divisions, Joakim Sundberg’s Trinity triumphed in the Cape 31 class, while Virginia Álvarez’s Stella was the best in the 6 Metre Open, and Pete Cooke’s Meteor Racing dominated in the Dragon class.

This event also marked the return of adapted sailing to the Sofía, attracting 22 Hansa 303 teams at the Port d’Andratx base. The overall winner was Piotr Cichocki from Poland, followed by world runner-up João Pinto from Portugal, with Spain’s Pau Toni Homar taking the title in the Copa de España de Hansa 303.

A prize-giving ceremony was held at the Real Club Náutico de Palma’s Sala Magna and attended by several dignitaries, including Rafael Gil, president of the RCNP; Ramón Picó, president of the Club Nàutic Arenal; and Juan Miguel Catalá, president of the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa.

The 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels will continue with the Olympic classes’ competitions, which will be held at the venues of the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, Es Portitxol, and Club Nàutic S’Arenal.

The event is organised by Bahía Activa, a foundation comprised of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, and the Balearic Sailing Federation, with support from World Sailing. The competition is co-financed by the Balearic Islands Government’s Sustainable Tourism Tax fund and has sponsorship from the Mallorca Responsible Tourism Foundation.
