The Jean Genie Triumphs: Recap of the 2024 5.5 Metre Alpen Cup at Riva del Garda

The standout performer this week at the 2024 5.5 Metre Alpen Cup was The Jean Genie (GBR 43), helmed by Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, and Ruairidh Scott, who triumphed with their consistent performance throughout the event.

In the first race of the day on Lake Garda, The Jean Genie clinched second place, setting the stage for their triumphant win with a race to spare. This marked the team’s third victory at the prestigious event in recent years, showcasing their consistency and expertise on the water.

Despite Friday’s drama, New Moon III (BAH 25), skippered by Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, and Peter Vlasov, delivered a solid performance to claim victory in the opening race. With a third-place finish in the subsequent race, New Moon III climbed two places to secure the runner-up position overall. Meanwhile, Girls on Film (GBR 41), led by Louise Morton, Sam Haines, and Andrew Mills, claimed the third spot on the podium.

In Race 7, The Jean Genie initially led the fleet but faced challenges as the breeze fluctuated and shifted direction. New Moon III seized the opportunity to overtake, ultimately securing victory in a tightly contested race.

The concluding race proved to be a test of endurance and adaptability as the breeze held steady, defying initial expectations. Ku-Ring-Gai III (AUS 66), helmed by John Bacon, Joost Houweling, and Ed Wright, emerged victorious, claiming their second race win of the event. Marie-Françoise XXII (SUI 233) trailed closely behind, securing a commendable second place.
