Cole Tapper has successfully defended his title at the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta, held on Perth’s Swan River, clinching a spot among the double winners of this prestigious event. Starting the final day trailing Danish skipper Matias Rossing 2-0 in the semi-finals, Tapper executed an impressive comeback, winning five consecutive races to secure the trophy once again.
Representing Sydney’s Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Tapper and his crew, including Max Brennan, Jack Frewin, Tim Howse, and Kieran Bucktin, exhibited exceptional composure under pressure, ultimately besting Rossing 3-2 in the semi-finals. In the final, they faced local favourite Marcello Torre, but Tapper quickly took command, winning both heats 2-0.
Competing in challenging conditions with a seabreeze gusting up to 20 knots, the Tapper crew demonstrated superior starting line tactics and racing strategy, leaving Torre struggling to catch up. Upon accepting the trophy, Tapper expressed his appreciation for both his semi-final and final competitors, acknowledging Rossing’s formidable challenge during their match-up and celebrating the win as a significant achievement.
Tapper praised his bowman Kieran Bucktin, who stepped in at the last minute after the regular bowman, Hamish Vass, sustained an injury on the first day of the regatta. This year’s Warren Jones Regatta, hosted by the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, is designed for participants under the age of 25. Notably, for Torre, this was his last chance to claim the trophy due to age restrictions, while Tapper now has the opportunity to become the first skipper to win the regatta three times.
