Swedish sweep – Berntsson and Östling victorious in Bermuda

(Hamilton, Bermuda, 27 October 2025) There were wild scenes of Swedish celebrations in Bermuda on Sunday as Johnie Berntsson and his team of Björn Lundgren, Herman Andersson and Oscar Angervall made history with a Bermuda Gold Cup hat-trick after beating Great Britain’s Ian Williams 3-0 in a tense final. Sweden’s Anna Östling and her Wings Sailing team defeated Denmark’s Lea Vogelius and her WOW Racing team in a battle for Scandinavian supremacy in the second edition of the Aspen Women’s Bermuda Match Racing Regatta.

Berntsson achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the only sailor to win the prestigious King Edward VII trophy three consecutive years since the event’s modern format began in 1985. He is also closing in on Sir Russell Coutts’s record of seven Gold Cup victories; his latest win brings his total to five.

In the Gold Cup final, Berntsson secured victory over Williams in tightly contested races. “If you had told me 20 years ago that I would win this regatta just once, I wouldn’t have believed you,” he reflected. Berntsson praised his team’s efforts, saying, “No other Swedes have ever won the Gold Cup and I look at all the other names on the King Edward VII trophy and it’s such an honour to be on there with them.”

Williams, although disappointed by the results, credited Berntsson for his strategic racing. “Johnie outsailed us in race two. There were some super tight races, and he got the hooks he needed when he needed them,” said Williams.

Meanwhile, Östling and her Wings Sailing team celebrated their own success in the Women’s Match Race, having previously expressed confidence in their ability to win. “I had such a good feeling that this would be our week,” said Östling, celebrating their strong performance throughout the event. “We made such good starts, and the way we sailed, I don’t think anybody would have beaten us today.”

Although third overall, France’s Pauline Courtois won the title for the 2025 Women’s World Match Racing Tour for the fifth consecutive year. She remarked on the challenges of maintaining top performance amidst increasing competition.
