Sunbeam Yachts – now in Australia

LAUNCHES: SUNBEAM YACHTS

Established Austrian builder Schochl Yachtbau is introducing its Sunbeam range of yachts to Australia through local distributor Westhead Marine. A specialist builder, it has traditionally produced heavily built centre cockpit yachts. The current fleet ranges in size from 24 foot to 53 feet, and the 34 is the largest yacht with an aft cockpit, all the rest being centre cockpit.

Distributor Karl Mikschofsky sees the range appealing to the more discerning Australian sailor. “The attraction is for the sailor who wants to move up from a mass produced boat to a serious cruising boat.” But he adds that the 34 is very much a performance cruiser that is built strongly. “Most of the boats sold are sailed around the world,” he said.

The hull is designed with performance in mind, with a long waterline and the lead keel has a relatively deep draft. The rig comes with roller reefing as standard and power is via a saildrive Yanmar.

Below decks is a traditional three cabin layout finished off in teak-type wood veneers and headroom is 1.8m in the saloon.

The company prides itself in its semi-custom approach to building and this range should be an interesting addition to the Australian performance cruiser scene. The Sunbeam 34 will be the first boat to arrive in Australia in the Autumn of 2008.
