Spaniards win the skiffs, British take the foiler

CAGLIARI, Italy, October 12, 2025 — The 2025 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra 17 World Championships concluded with a thrilling double-race medal series, crowning three deserving world champions. The event witnessed Spain dominating the skiff categories while Great Britain clinched the foiling title under clear Sardinian skies and strong mistral winds.

49er – Botín and Trittel Finally Go All the Way

Diego Botín and Florian Trittel Paul captured their first 49er World Championship, having returned to the class after nearly a year away. The reigning Olympic gold medalists showcased their skills and resilience, culminating in a winner-takes-all finale. They finished ahead of Dutch duo Bart Lambriex van Aanholt and Floris van de Werken, who secured silver, while Denmark’s Jonas Warrer, the 2008 Olympic gold medallist, and his new crew Mathias Lehm Sletten took bronze.

49erFX – Barceló and Cantero Make It a Spanish Double

In the 49erFX category, Paula Barceló and María Cantero clinched their maiden world title in a final race that saw them surge to the lead early on. Silver went to Sweden’s Vilma Bobeck and Ebba Berntsson, with Canada’s Georgia and Antonia Lewin-Lafrance making history by securing bronze, marking their nation’s first championship podium in over two decades.

Nacra 17 – Gimson and Burnet Edge the Italians in a Thriller

The British team of John Gimson and Anna Burnet won their third Nacra 17 World Championship, narrowly beating Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubilei of Italy in a tense final race. The tactical battle on the water kept spectators on the edge of their seats, with the British duo ultimately crossing the line first. The Netherlands’ Willemijn Offerman and Scipio Houtman took bronze, while Australia’s Brin Liddell and Rhiannon Brown finished fourth, showcasing the next generation of foiling talent.

A Championship for the Ages

The championship preparations in Cagliari were praised for their impeccable conditions, with competitors enjoying consistent breezes and excellent local hospitality. This event also served as a testing ground for a new sailor-designed format that combined traditional regatta elements with high-stakes racing, resulting in thrilling and unpredictable outcomes.

With two Spanish victories and a British triumph in the foiling fleet, the 2025 Worlds in Cagliari highlighted the pinnacle of high-performance sailing, setting the stage for the future as sailors look ahead to the Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
