The SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week (SMIRW) is a key event for sailors visiting Far Northern Queensland. This regatta, held annually from late winter to early spring, serves as a focal point for yacht owners and crews eager to explore new horizons before, during, and after the event.

Magnetic Island has become a preferred destination for competitors, with many participants from the Townsville Yacht Club’s regatta choosing to arrive early or extend their stay on the island. This timing is ideal, as it marks the end of the Northern Queensland sailing calendar.

Andrew Powell MP, Minister for the Environment and Tourism, noted that the event shines a spotlight on Townsville and North Queensland, reinforcing Queensland’s reputation as Australia’s events capital. He emphasised that the race week not only draws visitors but also creates jobs and opportunities for local businesses, with an expected influx of over 4,000 visitors and nearly 17,000 visitor nights.

The island offers a plethora of activities such as sightseeing, bushwalking, swimming, and diving, making it an attractive location for both participants and visitors. Gordon Beath, a 14-metre cruising catamaran owner from NSW, expressed his fondness for the region, highlighting plans to cruise to the Whitsundays and then return for Race Week. Beath, who has a deep connection with Magnetic Island, appreciates its natural beauty and the variety it offers.

Hughie Lewis, a Tasmanian competitor, is preparing for the event with his 46-foot yacht, Hartbreaker. He plans to tour around Townsville before heading to Magnetic Island with his crew. Other competitors, like Wayne McNee and Mary Ann Harvey, also share the excitement of the upcoming regatta, planning to explore the surrounding islands and enjoy the local atmosphere.

Participants frequently express their admiration for Magnetic Island, praising its friendly environment and the camaraderie that Race Week fosters. The event not only serves as a competitive platform but also as a chance to connect with fellow sailors and enjoy the stunning locales.

The SMIRW is a beloved finale of the Northern Queensland regatta circuit, encouraging sailors to stay and explore the region further. Supported by the Townsville City Council, more information can be found at www.magneticislandraceweek.com.au.
