As The Ocean Race Europe concluded in Montenegro, teams and sailors are now setting their sights on the upcoming Ocean Race Atlantic: New York to Barcelona, scheduled to commence on 2 September 2026 and expected to finish in Barcelona two weeks later.
This new transatlantic race will connect two iconic cities and was previewed for IMOCA sailors and teams at the recent event, where details on berthing and marina facilities, Ocean Live Park activations, and race conditions were discussed. A key highlight is a new crew rule requiring two male and two female sailors on each boat, promoting gender equality in offshore sailing.
Biotherm skipper Paul Meilhat, who recently won The Ocean Race Europe, expressed enthusiasm for the Atlantic race, citing its appealing course and the opportunity for personal and team growth through the competition. “The Ocean Race Atlantic is the next chapter,” he stated.
Rob Hagedorn and Mike Hopper from the organising agency ‘underdog & company’ revealed plans for a significant event in New York, highlighting the Brooklyn Bridge Marina as the base for teams. They aim to create a vibrant atmosphere with hospitality experiences and sailing opportunities for guests, all set against the backdrop of New York City’s skyline.
The 50-50 crew rule is notable for ensuring equal opportunities for both male and female offshore sailors in the new point-to-point race format, marking a significant evolution in The Ocean Race’s approach.
Francesca Clapcich, who is establishing her own IMOCA project, expressed her excitement about the race, particularly as it allows her to represent both her Italian and American heritage. “For me it’s special as a dual citizen – Italian and American – being able to race from the USA to Europe is a very special race route,” she shared.
Team Malizia’s skipper Boris Herrmann noted the extraordinary experiences shared among crew members, emphasising the familial bond formed during such intense competitions. Malizia is preparing to launch a new IMOCA for the race, keen to continue their journey in The Ocean Race Atlantic.
Furthermore, the event will focus on sustainability and ocean health, integrating ocean science initiatives and youth engagement activities. In Barcelona, the Ocean Live Park will engage thousands of fans with activities centred around racing, ocean science, and health.
Sailor Carlos Manera highlighted Barcelona’s importance as a finishing location, sharing how impactful such events can be for inspiring young sailors and fostering a connection to the sport.
The briefing for The Ocean Race Atlantic concluded with a video message from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who expressed excitement about hosting the event and the potential it holds for fostering connections between New York and Barcelona, while also promoting ocean health initiatives.
This upcoming race will lead into the next edition of The Ocean Race around the world, beginning in Alicante, Spain in January 2027.
