SailGP, renowned for its thrilling water racing, is set to debut in Rome during the 2027 season. The event, scheduled for September 11-12, 2027, will be the first of a three-year partnership with the City of Rome and the Lazio Region. This occasion marks an exciting addition to the global championship calendar alongside Hong Kong, which is also making its debut.
The inaugural Italy Sail Grand Prix | Rome will take place over two days of intense racing, with fans able to experience the action from a specially designed Race Stadium located at Porto Turistico di Roma.
SailGP CEO and co-founder, Sir Russell Coutts, alongside members of the Red Bull Italy SailGP Team, announced the collaboration at an event held at the Ara Pacis Museum, attended by local dignitaries including Francesco Rocca, President of the Lazio Region, and Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.
Coutts expressed excitement about the event, stating, “Rome, with its global significance, is the perfect stage to amplify our vision of thrilling competition and world-class hospitality in iconic cities around the world.”
Francesco Rocca highlighted the international significance of SailGP’s arrival, noting that hosting such innovative and spectacular competitions enhances Lazio’s reputation as a major destination for events that promote sport, tourism, and economic development.
Red Bull Italy SailGP Team athletes Jana Germani and Enrico Voltolini joined CEO Jimmy Spithill and other team owners at the launch event in front of the Colosseum, a historic backdrop for the announcement.
Spithill remarked on the allure of Rome as a venue, stating, “It’s a city with incredible history, and to be able to sail there makes it even more exciting.”
The 2027 season will also feature events in other iconic locations including New York, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, and Dubai. The Rome event will mark the third time SailGP races in Italy, following two previous events in Taranto in 2021 and 2023.
Thousands of fans are anticipated to attend the race weekend, enjoying not only the high-speed sailing but also a rich offering of local food, drink, and entertainment.
