Rolex Middle Sea Race 2025 – Passion, performance, and perseverance

Valletta, Malta – The Rolex Middle Sea Race, organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC), is set for its 46th edition, starting on Saturday, 18 October. This 606-nautical mile circumnavigation of Sicily continues to attract sailors globally, offering breathtaking scenery, complex tactical racing, and camaraderie. Entries are still being accepted until Friday, 19 September. Details can be found here.

An exceptional fleet is gathering in Malta’s historic Grand Harbour, with yachts from 23 nations represented. Competitors range widely, with many seasoned campaigns reflecting the unique allure of the Rolex Middle Sea Race.

The largest entry this year is the 30.5 metre/100 foot Black Jack 100 from Monaco, while the smallest is the 9.43m/31 ft Calypso from Malta. The oldest yacht is Stormvogel, launched in 1961, while three new launches include Palanad 4, Solenn for Pure Ocean, and Maxitude. The race will also see entries from China for the first time, along with Australian and New Zealand competitors. Last year’s overall winners, the German crew of Red Bandit, will defend their title with a chartered Botin 56 Black Pearl.

Skippered by Tristan Le Brun, Black Jack 100 aims to improve on last year’s near miss for line honours. Le Brun reflected on the challenges of the race and the modifications made to the yacht in preparation, including structural changes and a new sail plan.

In contrast, Maltese sailor Seb Ripard will navigate the smaller Calypso. For Ripard, the race merges tradition with personal journey, as he cherishes the scenic views and the camaraderie it brings.

French sailor Ludovic Gerard campaigns Solenn for Pure Ocean to raise awareness for marine conservation. Gerard has previously achieved podium finishes and aims for success with his new JPK 1050 while maintaining his commitment to environmental protection.

Since its inception in 1968, the Rolex Middle Sea Race has been hosted by the RMYC, celebrating community and tradition in Malta. Commodore Mark Napier emphasised the race’s significance beyond competition, highlighting the connection between Malta and the sea.

From Corinthian sailors to high-performance maxis, the Rolex Middle Sea Race continues to be a platform where passion meets perseverance. The race commences from Grand Harbour, Valletta, on Saturday, 18 October, marked by the iconic cannon fire from the Saluting Battery.
