For many Australian sailors, racing is simply part of owning a yacht. Whether it’s a Wednesday twilight, weekend club race or a major offshore regatta, we tend to spend plenty of time thinking about the boat, crew and weather before heading to the start line.
But what about the insurance?
According to specialist marine insurer Pantaenius, yacht owners who race should make sure they understand exactly how their policy applies when they’re competing — preferably well before the first warning signal.
Is yacht racing actually covered?
One of the basic questions Pantaenius recommends owners ask when arranging insurance is whether racing is covered.
If it is, the next question should be: what are the limitations?
Racing sailors should understand how their policy treats sails, masts and rigging, as well as whether different or higher excesses apply while racing.
It’s worth checking rather than simply assuming that because the boat has comprehensive insurance, every use of the yacht is automatically covered under the same conditions.
Heading to a major regatta?
Competing in a major regatta can introduce some additional considerations.
Pantaenius recommends confirming that the particular race, the cruising or racing area and the type of competition all fall within the policy.
The event organiser may also require competitors to hold a specific level of third-party liability insurance.
That makes insurance another item worth adding to the pre-regatta checklist, alongside entries, crew, safety requirements and getting the boat ready.
Finding out that something needs to be changed shortly before the event — or worse, after an incident — isn’t ideal.
Racing overseas adds another layer
For Australian sailors planning to race overseas, an early conversation with the insurer becomes even more important.
Pantaenius recommends speaking with your insurer well before departure.
The insurer may need to understand the planned route, timing, destinations and crew experience, as well as any plans relating to cyclone season.
Owners should also check local insurance requirements at their destination, particularly minimum liability limits required by marinas or event organisers.
Pantaenius separately recommends arranging appropriate travel insurance for overseas trips.
Don’t wait until there’s a problem
Another lesson from Pantaenius’ experience handling marine claims is the importance of communicating early.
If an incident occurs, owners should contact their insurer even if they’re initially unsure whether it will result in a claim.
“Good communication changes everything,” the Pantaenius team says.
Early involvement can help protect the boat, preserve evidence, control costs and potentially prevent further damage.
That’s particularly relevant when racing away from your home club or in an unfamiliar location, where finding appropriate repairers or other specialist assistance may be more complicated.
Add insurance to the racing checklist
Preparing a yacht for racing already involves plenty of lists.
There’s the boat, sails, safety equipment, crew, weather, race documents and all the inevitable last-minute jobs.
Checking your insurance doesn’t need to be complicated, but it deserves a place on that list.
Is racing covered? Are the sails, mast and rigging covered? Does a different excess apply? Is the race within your geographical limits? Does the organiser require a particular level of third-party liability insurance?
They’re straightforward questions — and much easier to answer before heading to the start line.
