Port Douglas Race Week is on the horizon

Preparation for the annual Port Douglas Race Week is in full swing.

North Queensland’s premier sailing event, hosted by Port Douglas Yacht Club (PDYC), is set to hit the waves from May 24 to 28, 2022. Entries are open and beginning to flow in.

Amongst the early entries are returning yachts – Stuart Tivey’s Frers 48 Ragamuffin III and Lance Denby’s Bavaria 38 Ostara, both from Townsville Yacht Club. The event, held on the magnificent Trinity Bay off Port Douglas, attracts many repeat competitors travelling north from both Townsville and Cairns.

2021 was a clean sweep across all divisions for the visiting fleet from Townsville claimed by the Hanse 445 of James Permezel, Charm Offensive, Russell Kingston’s Beneteau 423 Falcon, and Jasmin, Julian Summers Fountaine Pajot Mahe 36. The Port Douglas locals and the visiting Cairns fleet will be keen to make amends this year.

Major sponsors are Riddoch Insurance Services and Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina. Riddoch have a special deal with event host Port Douglas Yacht Club based on the business derived through their association with the club. And Crystalbrook are again offering free berthing for race days and a 50 per cent discount on berthing for two days each side of race days for all participants.

Calling the shots once again will be Race Officer Ross Chisholm. Ross is the event chairman for Airlie Beach Race Week and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the event along with assistant Gayleen Lowe. “We have a pretty vast experience in planning regattas, so have a substantial range of courses to use,” Ross said, indicating his desire to diversify the courses to be sailed this year.

The regatta caters for all with four divisions, four days of racing and a week of the most fun under the tropical sun.
