The VX One International Class Association is pleased to announce that World Sailing has granted official recognition to the VX One as an International Class after a recent vote by the World Sailing Council during its Annual Conference.
Jeff Eiber, president of the VX One Class Association, expressed enthusiasm for this recognition: “It opens the door for all sailors — from weekend warriors to Olympic champions — to compete in officially recognised World Championships in one of the most exhilarating and rewarding high-performance one-design boats around.”
Since its inception, the VX One has gained recognition among sailors of all levels. The boat has been awarded titles such as Sailing World’s “Overall Boat of the Year” and “Best One Design” and Sail Magazine’s “Best Boat” in 2012. This success has led to the establishment of thriving VX One fleets across five continents.
The VX One stands out due to its design philosophy as a fast, responsive hybrid dinghy-keelboat, making sailing straightforward and enjoyable. Constructed by renowned Olympic-class boat builders, Mackay Boats and Ovington Boats, the VX One caters to various sailors, from casual enthusiasts to elite racers.
Achieving recognition from World Sailing marks a significant achievement for both the VX One sportsboat and its devoted global community. Obtaining international status involves a stringent process that verifies the Class’s structural integrity and widespread appeal. A class must demonstrate active member engagement through a formal association, along with consistent racing activities across multiple continents.
With the newfound status, the VX One Class is now eligible to organise official World Championships sanctioned by World Sailing and engage internationally appointed Race Officers and officials, ensuring that events maintain high standards of equity and professionalism.
Looking ahead, the Class Association is focusing on the inaugural World Championship, scheduled for early 2027. Venues are currently under consideration, with further announcements anticipated in forthcoming months.
This milestone is viewed as a landmark achievement by John Clinton from Mackay Boats, who highlighted the success of the VX One in uniting sailors from diverse backgrounds who share a passion for fast and tactical one-design sailing. “Achieving World Sailing status recognises that strength and sets the stage for an exciting new era,” he added.
